Auburn Urban Studio Feasibility Study

Downtown Birmingham, Alabama

Working with Auburn University, Design Initiative was commissioned to perform a feasibility study and develop a conceptual design for the adaptive re-use of an existing structure in downtown Birmingham for the University’s outreach and support off-campus. The existing seven story structure will be repurposed to provide space for multiple Departments and user-groups, each with specific programmatic and spatial needs.

Our office managed the preliminary programming effort as well as documenting the existing conditions in order to investigate the potential configurations and use groupings as options for the clients review and input. Auburn’s School of Architecture’s Urban Studio will be based in the building, in addition to space for members of the Alumni Association, Executive Education, Athletics, Provost’s Office and the Development team. Critically important was the ability for the building to engage with the City and regional community as well as become a landmark for Auburn University in Birmingham.
