As a consultant to Macknally Land Design, Design Initiative was responsible for the design and renovation of the new and existing structures of the park. Analysis of the existing park and the team’s commitment to Birmingham’s Sustainable Cities Initiative lead to the idea of responsible storm water management, on all levels of the project, as a guiding theme. This idea of responsible stormwater management is revealed in the design of the new structures. The new Concession and Pressbox structure and open-air pavilions feature sloped metal roofs with deep overhangs for shading and directing rainwater to the bioswales and rain-gardens. The existing main pavilion was converted into a dynamic open-air structure that now serves as a primary arrival point of the park. All structures are improved to meet current codes and accessibility requirements and incorporate sustainable strategies of such as daylighting, passive cooling and use of durable low maintenance building materials.
